Teach Me How To Love
One of my favorite songs says, “teach me how to love, show me the way to surrender my heart.” I know you know the song! I never really paid attention to the fact that this song preaches a real message.
I am a believer who always professes my love for the Lord but it took one day of true self-examination when I realized that I never really knew how to love God. I have always been a person to just say the words but I never took the time to realize what it meant to love Him. I always would cry out my love during church service. I would post my statuses saying how much I love Jesus but what did it mean to love Him??
So when the day came when I came face to face with the truth that I did not know HOW to love God is when I had to humble myself and ask God to teach me. Instantly I was directed to 1 Corinthians chapter 13. The passage said, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.” This scripture was a major reality check for me. The first line put me in check! The Word says that love is patient. Well…I was rarely patient with God. I would make my request known and then get upset that He wasn’t passing out my blessings as soon as I would have liked it. The Word said that love does not envy. I was failing in that area too! I was so jealous of all the people that seemed to be doing better than me and whom God seemed to favor in my eyes. So while God was performing spiritual surgery on me, while He was cutting out the bad things and stitching up my wounds, I was being positioned to love God in the way I was supposed to.
Maybe you are currently struggling loving God in the way the Word instructs. Use my own story as a reference to help you love in a greater way. Love is everything that God is. He’s patient with us, He doesn’t envy, He doesn’t boast, He’s kind. Strive daily to love God and to love others in the way that is mapped out in 1 Corinthians. If you’re struggling, simply pray this prayer: Father, teach me how to love. Amen.
