To Be Holy
Oh to be holy. I thought only God could be considered holy. I thought, “How can I be Holy if I’m born a sinner?” “Why do I keep getting drawn into the things of this world, why do I keep getting mixed up with the wrong group of girls, and why do I keep attracting the same unsaved dog of a man?” These are the thoughts I use to have about being “holy” until God revealed His Word to me.
First, being holy doesn’t mean being perfect. Holy means to be set apart or separate from sin and evil. God himself is holy and God calls us to be holy, just as He is-1 Peter 1:16. But, you have to realize that apart from God this task of being holy is impossible. You must have the Holy Spirit filling you with His holiness. You can only live a holy life through the power of the Spirit, therefore the first step to living this way is to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior.
One way you can be sure to try and live a holy life is by being obedient to God in all areas of your life. When you live in obedience to God, you are staying separate from evil. You’re offering your body as a “living sacrifice” to God. The purpose of living a holy life is to glorify God and display His ways to those around you, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”-Matthew 5:16. Living a holy life of obedience to God is living in true freedom from the bondage of sin and temptations. When you obey God you no longer have to be a slave to doing everything that the world does; you no longer have to be a slave of feeling trapped in the world and not being set apart. God’s Holy Spirit dwelling inside of you releases you of that bondage and gives you the strength and courage to be set apart-to be holy.
It’s not always easy to choose obedience to God, especially if you’re trying to do it all on your own. But remember that scripture says that you are from God and have overcome the world and disobedience, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:4. The Holy Spirit will produce Christlikeness inside of you, and as you yield to Him, you can live a holy life. In Romans 6:11 it says that we should count ourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Any time you face a temptation, you should say, “I’m dead to that! That was part of my old life! I am a new creation in Christ!” To live a holy life, to separate yourself from sin, you must see yourself as God does-as a born-again woman of the Most High, clothed with the righteousness of Christ.
Let’s vow to be set apart ladies. When that guy pressures you to live in sin before marriage, vow to be holy like Christ. When another woman makes you upset and your flesh desires to tell her a few “choice” words, vow to be holy like Christ. When your friends are at the club drinking and smoking, vow to be holy like Christ. It’s easy to be and live like the world, but it’s much more rewarding to not be of this world. When you live holy, people should notice that God’s light is living inside of you and shining on others.
