He Became Sin

While spending time in devotion, the totality of what happened on the Cross of Calvary was revealed to me. You know, we say in general about how Jesus took upon our sins on the cross but how about this. The Word says that “He [God] hath made Him [Jesus Christ] to be sin for us, who knew no sin…”

Let’s just have a selah (pause and think of that) moment right there.

Jesus became sin. It’s one thing to commit acts of sin, but it’s another thing to become it.

What does it mean to be?

To be, in this text, simply means to occupy a position in space. The very essence of Who God is, Jesus Christ, traded places with us humans to become the very nature that we took upon ourselves after the fall. That’s deep. Here He is, pure perfection, pure love, no hatred or guile found in Him yet because we were the joy that was set before Him, He laid His deity aside so that we could be made the righteousness of God in Him.

As we prepare our services and thoughts for Resurrection Day and this whole season, let us not forget how much the Father really loves us. He sent His perfect, only begotten, His beloved Son to die so that we may have eternal life.
