The Best Form of Protection

You're probably looking at the title and thinking to yourself “isn't this a Christian blog?” And it absolutely is. Stay with me for a moment and the title will make sense.

In the winter season it’s cold...brutally cold in some parts of the United States and it is our job to make sure we have our best outerwear to prepare for those long, often, hard winters.

In the rainy season we make sure that we always have our umbrellas in tow and our very fashionable rain boots because a girl never knows when she'll get caught in a bad rainstorm. See where I’m headed now?

But what about our everyday wear? I'm not talking about our ever-changing attire that prepares us for the four seasons. What I’m talking about is the everyday gear needed for a season that we all feel but can’t see. A season that doesn't take a break and doesn't give us a chance to purchase the latest and greatest outerwear. A season I like to call battle.

That's right—battle season! And while it has some characteristics of the four seasons that we’re used to, we can’t prepare for it with our winter coats, hats, scarves, or rain boots. No ma’am! We need a type of protection that’s not found at Nordstrom’s, Macy’s, or H&M. We need a protection that can only come from one place—the word of God.

You see, we have a real enemy who’s fighting every day to destroy our lives. He wants to steal our joy, our peace, our husbands, our children, our relationships...EVERYTHING. But just like we have an enemy, we have an even bigger and better God who has given us the tools needed to always be prepared for battle season.

Ephesians 6:11 says, “put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil.”

The chapter goes on to tell us that we aren’t wrestling or warring against flesh and blood [contending with only physical opponents,] but against spirit forces of wickedness in the supernatural sphere (Ephesians 6:12 AMP.) And we can’t fight spiritual forces with physical stuff. We need real stuff. Not that pretty stuff you see in the magazines, catalogs, and fashion blogs but stuff specific to the season of battle that we’re constantly in—war gear.

And unfortunately, we don’t have time to interchange our war attire the way we do our attire for the four seasons. We must stay clothed in our war gear because we never know when the enemy will strike. His mission is to take us out and he fights dirty, but thank God that we can too. By putting on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness…and taking up the shield of faith, we can extinguish all of the flaming arrows of the evil one (Ephesians 6:12-17 NIV.)

The way we arm ourselves in our protective gear is not merely reading scripture but through active fervent prayer. When we put on our war gear we must then pick up our weapon and pray against all the schemes, attacks, and assignments of the enemy. Ephesians 6:18 says, “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” God has given us this very powerful weapon to be used to our advantage and it is through our prayers that we can have the victory that our Heavenly Father has promised us.  And this, ladies, is our best form of protection.
