What is my Purpose?

Jeremiah 1: 5

Before I created you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart; I made you a prophet to the nations.”

What is my purpose God? What have you called me to do? This has been my personal prayer for a while. I want to ensure that I am walking and exercising in my personal purpose because if I’m not, then I risk the potential of not being blessed or blessing others.

Our purpose in life, as God originally created man, is 1) glorify God and enjoy fellowship with Him, 2) have good relationships with others, 3) work, and 4) have dominion over the earth. But with man's fall into sin, fellowship with God is broken, relationships with others are strained, work seems to always be frustrating, and man struggles to maintain any appearance of dominion over nature. Only by restoring fellowship with God, through faith in Jesus, can purpose in life be rediscovered. The purpose of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. We glorify God by fearing and obeying Him, keeping our eyes on our future home in heaven, and knowing Him intimately. We enjoy God by following His purpose for our lives, which enables us to experience true and lasting joy and the abundant life that He desires for us.

This is our overall general purpose as man, but it amazes me how each individual person was purposefully made to fulfill a destiny and a plan that God has in store and it was uniquely designed just for me. In 1st Corinthians it talks about how we are the body of Christ and each part is just as important as another, but if you don’t operate in your purpose then your destiny will not fulfill its purpose. We may think or assume that God wants us to be in a particular career, city, or even relationship, but deep down we know it was our own agenda and then wonder why things aren’t going our way or blessings aren’t coming. It’s because we’re not operating in our purpose.

How you find your purpose is by recognizing God’s voice, which can sound like our own voice, a good friend, or spiritual mentor. But we should be able to discern when and if God is speaking to us. I am able to recognize my mother’s voice when she calls me or when she’s in another room because I’ve spent time and built a relationship with her. The same principle applies to God. When we spend time in His word and praying to him we’re going to recognize when God is telling us what our purpose is and how to operate in it. There may be a season when we don’t understand the position we’re in or how a certain circumstance will lead us to our ultimate purpose but we have to understand that God won’t give us something we’re not fully ready for. We may be in positions now where it’s not our purpose, but it’s the step in order to prepare us for what God has designed for us.

I’m so glad to know that I’m loved by a divine being who is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-merciful so I don’t have to worry about where I’ll end up cause I know God’s with me every step of the way because that is how he designed it. It’s like if I was being led by a professional tour guide on an African safari. I may be uncomfortable in my surroundings for a little while, but I don’t worry because I know the tour guide is knowledgeable about the journey and will get me to my end destination. I’m fully allowing God to be my tour guide and I’m excited to hear him tell me what my purpose is.

My prayer is: "Dear God, please renew and transform me from the inside out! When feelings of inferiority, insecurity, and self-doubt creep into my heart, help me to see myself the way You do. I want to be held tightly by Your truthI claim these blessings in Your name. Amen!"
