Build Your House on the Rock
-“…The rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.”
Everyone goes through difficulties in life that we don’t understand. I know I personally can easily get discouraged and ask God "Why is this happening? I honor you, I obey you, and I do what I’m supposed to do so why is this happening?" Then I’m reminded of the scripture that says, “Rain falls on the just and the unjust.” That then lets me know that no matter how good a person I may be, no matter how much I honor God, I am going to have rain and storms.
Feelings and thoughts like this remind me of Jesus’s parable about the men who built houses. The wise man built his house on a rock and the foolish man built his house on sand. The wise man heard God’s word and carefully chose the place to build his house. He understood that the foundation of a home was very important. He understood that there will not always be good weather and that storms would come and his house must be built to withstand those future storms. The wise man dug deep and laid his foundation on a rock and put forth a lot of effort into his house. Once his house was built the storm came, but his house stood firm because of its foundation on a Rock. The wise man heard God and obeyed.
The foolish man did not look for a firm and strong foundation for his house. He instead found a sandy place to build on and therefore did not have to put forth as much effort like the wise man. The same storm came to the foolish man’s house as it did the wise man’s house, but his house couldn’t stand firm in the storm because it was not built on a Rock. Jesus said that his house fell and it was a great fall, probably because it was an unnecessary fall. The foolish man also heard God but did not obey like the wise man did.
Storms come to everyone regardless. The exact same storm came to both men; the just and unjust. Sometimes I may think “It doesn’t make a difference if I honor God because the same thing happens to everybody else. I built my house on a rock, but yet I’m in this storm.” As the story reveals that wise man’s house that was built on a rock stood strong in the test of the storm. I clearly see now that when we honor God, the storms will come, but we have a promise from God that others don’t have. When it’s all said and done I will still be standing.
Everyone is building a “house”-a spiritual house for our souls. When we build we must have the right foundation, and the only foundation that will keep us from complete destruction is the Rock-Jesus Christ. When we ask for God to forgive and save us we are now making Him our foundation. We have to build our souls on the right foundation to withstand the storms that are going to come regardless. I’d rather be in a storm with an expensive umbrella, than to save money and be in a storm then get sick because I refused to buy an umbrella. When life's problems and storms come our way I’m so glad to know that I can prematurely rejoice because I know the storms cannot shake my house. Sadly people are like the foolish man and find it hard to dig deep and they look for an easier way to build their house. Their homes will fall and it will be a great fall. I don't know about you, but I want to be the wise builder.
My prayer is “I thank you God for your promise to bring me through every difficulty, hardship, and adversity I will face. I receive your strength and victory knowing that my house is built on the Rock. I pray for my "foolish" family and loved ones who refuse to build their spiritual souls on the right foundation. I pray that you keep them and bless them. I claim these blessings in your name, Amen.”
